Jonathan Seckl is Professor of Molecular Medicine at Edinburgh University. He writes, ‘Exposure to stress hormones and other challenges before or soon after birth ‘hardwires’ the body and brain, thus determining the lifetime risk of psychiatric, metabolic and cardiac disorders. But how does this risk occur and can it persist into subsequent unexposed generations? This may reflect epigenetics, the emerging science of how the environment meets our genes.’
